If there is oil off the shore of NJ we should be anxious to drill for it

Issues are rare and we could get a lot of tax dollars out of it to help meet NJ's huge needs. Better to get tax money now before oil becomes useless.

Same goes for Fl....oh. Never mind.

WASHINGTON — At 5:20 on Tuesday evening, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke tweeted a photo of himself at the Tallahassee airport with Gov. Rick Scott of Florida, announcing that he had decided, after meeting with Governor Scott, to exempt the state from a new Trump administration plan to open up most of the nation’s coastline to offshore oil drilling.

Drill baby drill, as the morons say.

You are all being too reflexively quick to oppose. The tax impact, both direct and indirect would be transformative to the state's finances.

I’m sure the leopards won’t eat MY face

The environmental impacts are also a concern.  "Issues" are not as rare as you may think.

Stupid idea.  There will be leaks and we will be on the hook to clean them up. And clean ups don't always work. New Jersey already has an industrial waste image problem.  We need to think more Garden State not toxic state.

The drilling would be in Federal waters.  What state tax dollars or other income do you think would come to NJ?

Money/greed is not a justification for everything.

And with the onslaught of EV's, solar power, etc, we will rely less and less on fuel.  Then when happens to all those rigs in the middle of  ocean.  We have already done enough to destroy the planet.

Given that “anxious” primarily means worried or fearful, the tread title is almost dispute-proof.

Employees would flock to the rigs. Their income would largely be taxable in NJ. Suppliers would set up business creating more income tax receipts and sales tax receipts. On shore facilities would generate property tax. Transport of goods and people would generate fuel taxes. Refineries would expand. And much more.

And who exactly would this morons be? Red staters? Flyover country? So much for stigma free town. Stigma free if you only share the “acceptable” perspective.

I wouldn't use the term "moron," but anyone whose energy policy fits on a bumper sticker probably isn't interested in a lot of deep thought on an issue.

I was reading that this is only economical if the infrastructure is already in place, they mentioned Alabama. Basically, it costs a ton of money and is only economical if you have the pipelines that can bring the oil from the rigs to shore. Shipping it is too inefficient.

All the same would be true of a wind or solar farm. Minus the expanded refineries.

No. The morons are people who say "drill baby drill" without irony.

How much revenue does the NJ shore economy bring in yearly? How much would you expect oil drilling off the coast to bring in? When there's a spill and we lose much of that shore-generated revenue, will we be net-negative or net-positive?

Unless you already have these answers at hand, and are very certain of them, it may be a good idea to reign in the "anxiety" to do anything.

How much money does the beaches bring to Gulf communities. All those people enjoying the beaches there are not deterred by oil drilling off shore.

So you don't actually have numbers on hand, then. Yet you're certain the math works in our favor. That's a lot of confidence with little backing it up.

Their seafood is toxic. You want oil washing ashore?
