iCarly on Nick appropriate for 6 and 10 year old? archived

Does anyone have an opinion on this show? I watched one episode this morning and was not impressed. My 10 year old loves it, but I didn't like what I saw. I am curious about what other people think.
My almost 12 year old watches it sometimes. I don't think I'd have my 6 year old watching it, though, if I still had one. JMO.

dev- Out of curiousity, what didn't you like about it?

Carly and her friend got back at the friend's boyfriend (for trying to kiss Carly) by hanging him on a hook and giving him a super-wedgie for two hours on her webcast. The friend also sprayed squeezy cheese down some kid's pants in school. That just doesn't seem like good problem-solving to me! Seriously, I know these shows are dumb, and I don't really have a problem with them - my girls watch Hannah Montana, and I am fine with it - but this one seems to really be verging on inappropriate.

My kids - ages 6 1/2, 8 and 9 years - watch it all the time. It's all the same stuff they see every day at school. I have no issues with it.

Where do you kids go to school, MB?

My 6.5 yr. old watches it all the time. He gets the difference between the good and bad behavior, the show exhibits. If he was the type of kid who might copy the bad stuff, I probably wouldn't allow the show to be watched. He also still watches Blues Clues and Max and Ruby with his 2yr old brother. I figure, as long as the balance exists, the innocence isn't lost.

My seven-year-old LOVES this show. When my 11-year-old mocked him for watching it because "it's so unrealistic," seven-year-old snapped back, "It's just a TV show -- it's not supposed to be realistic!"

My six-year-old daughter loves it. I would have no problem if she gave some smarmy boy a two-hour wedgie.

Of course I do. But it's fun to jerk your chain (so to speak).

Its been like that my whole life...lol

My son is only 3 and I watch iCarly WITHOUT him. I think the actress is quite talented (she was in School of Rock and Drake and Josh). So, if I'm flipping through the channels and notice it, I pause for a bit an watch. It's gross, silly stuff, but not inappropriate for it's target audience (6-10 year old girls). It's much better than most of the tween programming out there.

Now a previous poster mentioned Max and Ruby. My son LOVES that show. I can't stand it. First of all, it seems the sister (Ruby) is the parent and has this annoying busy-body, know-it-all attitude that just gets under my skin. And, Max spends 90% of an episode disobeying only to be rewarded in the end. On that show, I am not impressed!

My 7 year old loves this show also--and by the way he is a boy.
We've gone back and forth on the tween shows. Naked Brothers band was a family favorite in its first year but this season there is a sexual undercurrent as the older brother gets bigger and the little one went from cute into a brat. Plus the babysitter is completely inappropriate.
Ned Declassified is another favorite but it reminds me of Saved by The Bell.
I've forbidden Zack and Cody because the one episode I saw the girls were all stupid and materialistic except for the sister who is a little too hot for my liking.

And by the way my 4 year old second child watches all this too. I know he shouldn't but it is preferable to Calliou (who wines all day) or elmo (whose grammar makes me hurl)

Who is the sister in Zack and Cody? London is the hotel heiress who is supposed to be like a mockery of Paris Hilton, and Maddie is her friend, who works the concession stand at the hotel. Besides the twins, none of them are related to each other.

I had the same question, Tofu.

I think she might have meant Zoey 101 on Nick, since all the other shows she mentioned are from Nick.

Great feedback. I told my girls that I would watch another episode with them to see if the one I saw was just particularly bad. I will probably let them continue to watch it, but I may wander in more often than I usually do during TV time. They seem to understand why I am not crazy about it, and they are not the types to model bad behavior. Apparently they weren't really exaggerating when they said, "EVERYONE is watching it, Mom!!!"

Wow I never saw or heard of this show but if the genders were reversed in the description provided by devpamac I think all the people who don't have a problem with it would be expressing serious misgivings. I don't think that's fair or right. Maybe it's just silly and over the top, I don't know, but either way it makes me glad we don't have cable. I guess physically abusing and publicly humiliating adolescent boys is great fodder for humor? Is it OK because they're boys?

Oye...there is someone out there who does not have CABLE!? Good God!

Absolutley!!! It's classic!

On Zack and Cody, I thought that the older girl (she seems around 19) is a step-sister. Am I wrong?
I really didn't watch it very closely but I think one of the boys was swooning over her. Maybe she worked in the gift shop? Again--didn't pay close attention.
Disney is not big in our house. My son actually asked if we could go on the Nick cruise instead when my parents said they wanted to take them to Disney World.

Oh mammabear...this thread was made for you!

Gotta say that no one's going to find "appropriate problem solving skills" on a show that's basically slapstick. It's the same kind of problem solving you'll find on the Three Stooges.

My kids are into the tween shows (mostly Nick rather than Disney, for reasons that totally escape me), but we did TV turnoff so they didn't get a steady diet. And I have to say that when I watch with them...or at least near them...iCarly is pretty funny. Then again I think Sponge Bob is a scream and I know lots of people who question my intelligence for that one. lol
