Hello, I am trying to come up with a list of (former) famous residents of Millburn/Short Hills, for a sesquicentennial project. For this project I am not using living people, but would welcome that information for a list to be used for another historical project. We have about 50 names thus far and are trying to get 150 names (for the 2007 150th anniversary of the town's establishment). Do you know of any former famous M-SH sports figures, artists, business men or women, scientists, etc? Thanks!
Perhaps some of the names I found thus far will jog a memory or two:
Will Bradley -- Illustrator, printer, master of American Art Nouveau Clinton Davisson -- Winner of Nobel Prize for Physics Dave Fern -- Partner and founder of A&P Jimmie Foxx -- Baseball Hall of Famer A. Oakey Hall -- Infamous mayor of NY in the Tammany reign Bishop John Henry Hobart -- Early bishop of the diocese of NY John Wesley Hyatt -- Inventor of celluloid Frank B Jewett -- Bell Labs president 1925-1940 Walter Johnson -- 1936 Baseball Hall of Famer Mervin J Kelly -- Bell Labs president 1951-59, then director of Bausch & Lomb Gustave Kobbe -- Author of opera and travel books Van Dearing Perrine -- Impressionist landscape painter William Whetten Renwick -- Artist, architect, landscape designer Norman Schwartzkopf Sr -- Father of the general of the same name and first supt of NJ State Police Arthur T Vanderbilt -- Chief justice of the NJ State Supreme Court Thomas Watson -- founder of IBM
I have names of other somewhat lesser-known artists, athletes, authors, etc. Can you add any?
Mr Hartshorn, founder of that roller shade company, must have been pretty famous given all the things around town with his name on it...............
Also Charles P Day -- the Donald Trump of his era 1900- 1940-- Greenwood gardens can give you all the background on him. And his neighbor Renwick who was his landscape architect.
Have you read the historical Society books on the history of the town ? best place to start.
Actually, I believe it was Joseph P. Day (Charles is his son). Also, I believe one of the founders of Bed, Bath, and Beyond lived or still lives here. Didn't Martin Scorcese live here at some point? Also: Peter Van Sant, correspondent for ABC News Anne Hathaway, actress, star of "The Princess Diaries" and "The Devil Wears Prada" Faith Hochman, former federal judge Norbert Leo Butz, winner of tony award two years ago (lived here for a few years, now lives in Maplewood) Nicholas Dawes, antiques dealer and long-time appraiser on "Antiques Road Show" Dr. Victor Parsonnet, pioneering heart surgeon
Given MSH is one of the premier addresses in New Jersey it isn't surprising a lot of business executives, etc. have lived there at one time or another. You might look at famous people who grew up in MHS, as opposed to just living there. To be honest on the list you posted the only names that really float my boat are Fox, Johnson and Watson. The rest are your run of the mill millionaires.
Thank you all for the additional suggestions for the list -- and to kmk for the effort! I actually had many of them on the list, but didn't want to run on and on with too many names here. While I didn't know about Van Sant or Butz, someone else recently reminded me of Hochberg, Dawes, and Parsonnet and I am saving them all for another list. For this list I need the names of people who are deceased. My husband had an idea today and Googled the words "born in Millburn," "born in Short Hills," "lived in Millburn," "lived in Short Hills," "died in Millburn," and "died in Short Hills" and came up with a load of names. Many of them, as bobk mentioned, are financial gurus. Among them, though, we also found famous photographers, olympians, musicians, ... AND ... Scott Levy, aka RAVEN, an Extreme Championship Wrestling pro wrestler! They run the gamut ...
Oh, and there was Lorenzo Borghese, the "latest meat puppet" (according to the online US Magazine) on The Bachelor. I am pretty sure he is not deceased
according to www.imdb.com , Meryl Streep was born in Summit, NJ, but graduated from Bernards HS. Also " She attended Harding Township Middle School, in Harding, New Jersey for 1 or 2 years"
Wow! Thank you all again _very much_ for your additional suggestions! I am writing them down as soon as I see your posts. Thank you for the terrific help.
Two more 'noted residents' in addition to the previously mentioned Anne Hathaway are listed here (again scroll down the page to where it lists 'noted residents').
Thank you again for all your suggestions! From a 1942 magazine about the community I found also:
-- J. Andre Foulihoux, architect of Radio City -- Harold Burris Meyer, invented the "sounding board" that enables a singer ot hear his or her voice exactly as it sounds to the audience -- Frederick R. Colie, former justice of the NJ Supreme Court -- Julia Terry, founder of New Eyes for the Needy
I also learned of:
-- George Sternweiss, Yankee second baseman -- George Weiss, Yankee general manager -- General Courtney Hodges, first Army commander involved in the Battle of the Bulge -- Edward Dufner, renowned artist -- Brendan Byrne, former governor of NJ
