Explosion in Chelsea

25 injured but luckily no fatalities. Probably a bomb. Streets are cordoned off. CNN has been live.

possibly a second one now on 27th street

Seaside Park earlier in the day. 'Pipe bomb' style in a garbage can on the boardwalk.

My bet is some talentless coward dropped $10-30k to fail out of college, read a few pages of the Anarchist Cookbook, and pulled a Dzhokhar. There's no Trump Tower Climber Social Media confession yet so he's both dumb and ugly. Screw this (these) guy (guys).

It's probably someone upset about health care!

You say that as a joke, although it's not really the time for levity, but it is possible...

Mayor DeBlasio said that some of the injuries were significant, (and caused by shrapnel), but at the moment did not appear life-threatening.

I say it because that's what Bloomberg said when a car bomb was found in Times Square. Offering examples of who could be responsible he ticked off first and only domestic political adversaries.

De Blasio's "it's an intentional act but we have no evidence that it's terrorism" is contradictory, comedic and telling. It's obviously terrorism. He means "there's no proof it's the kind of terrorism everyone already knows it is."

A man stabbed a bunch of people in Minneapolis last night. Bomb goes off in Seaside. Dodd Frank opponents probably.

Why is it necessary to make a joke?

Because Stigginit.

Wait- pointing out that Bloomberg stating a car bomb is possibly "someone upset about health care" is idiotic or that the idea that there is no reason to think an "intentional act" involving an exploding pressure cooker is terrorism is buffoonish is bashing liberals?

You'd have to claim those as "liberal positions" for that to be so.

Huh.

Guilty as charged then I guess...?

I gotta remember that one! Thanks!

Well DeBlasio must be feeling pretty foolish right now. But feeling foolish is something he must be pretty useful by now.

This hit pretty close to home and it shook me up quite a bit. It wasn't far from where we live. We were coming home in the car, and we had a tough time of it. We spent hours in Manhattan traffic trying to get around the area. I lost my cool and yelled at a taxi driver for blocking a travel lane. All the while, we were listening to the radio. It became clear to me that my irritation with the taxi driver was really distress over the incident.

We got home super late because of the traffic tie-up. I had two bad dreams, pretty upsetting. In one, a neighbor was killed. I called her yesterday just to make sure even though I knew it was irrational. In the other, I couldn't get home, despite trying.

Thanks to the officers in Linden, NJ who caught him!

Yes.

Agreed - but don't celebrate too soon, since I am guessing his lawyer (and the apologists here) will call this a "conspiracy" (despite the overwhelming evidence of the cell phone calls and fingerprints): http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2016/09/family_of_bombing_suspect_sued_elizabeth_for_discr.html

"Bombing suspect Ahmad Khan Rahami's family sued Elizabeth for anti-Muslim harassment"

A person's lawyer will raise any defense possible.

Who on MOL has ever been an apologist for terrorism?

It's not what Bloomberg said. I was responding to your "joke" about "Dodd-Frank opponents".

He obviously meant that there was no evidence at the time of a link to ISIS or any such international terrorist organization. There is always a problem with "everyone already knows" since no one knows until all the facts or in. Certainly given recent history when something like this happens "everyone suspects".

Yes, and exactly.

Apparently (and all I know is what I read in the news) this guy's fingerprints were found on the unexploded device in New York City. That seems like a reason to go looking for him. I agree the officers in Linden did a great (and brave) job taking him in.

Eh, NYT disagrees.

http://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/09/19/nyregion/bill-de-blasio-new-york-explosion.html

The paragraph before Cuomo's attempt to clean up after De Blasio (funny given their relationship) summarizes the issue nicely. It's a silly formulation he's (DeBlaz) going for.

Heard this morning that they also were able to recover some info from one of the phones used and that survived one of the blasts, which linked him. Which, if true, is pretty wild.

And Blaz is a twit.

There are some reports that Rahmani attended CHS for his freshman year then transferred to Ediaon HS

WSJ is reporting he left a print on the phone. Total imbicile if true. Was wondering how stupid someone would have to be to use a burner phone bought with a credit card. A fingerprint beggars belief.

I'm suspicious that the whole phone thing is a cover for a different method of identification, but whatever. They got him.

Not sure imbecile is a strong enough word. They found him sleeping outside of a bar.

I find it disconcerting that a public official who says, "We don't know the motive yet," then learns the motive and states what is is, is considered somehow foolish for waiting for facts before making a public statement.

Public statements of acknowledged ignorance followed by public statements of confirmed knowledge is good leadership. We're talking about a 24 hour turn around.

Also, law enforcement often advises that public statements about ongoing investigations be vague, so as not to indicate to suspects at large that they are close to being captured. The public statement about the suspect's identity, once confirmed was strong and fairly high tech - his photo was e-blasted to all in the NYC area not only to law enforcement. That action, made once appropriate, led to his capture.

Is the criticism really that no one jumped to conclusions? I don't want duly elected leaders or law enforcement jumping to conclusions. "Not confirmed to be. . ." just means, "We're seeking confirmation."

If your response is "It was obviously a Muslim terrorist connected to ISIS," please don't respond. Broken clocks can be correct, but they are not to be used as the standard of time keeping.

Interesting coverage on Rachel Maddow's show. It seems that the bombs were not only different styles pressure cooker and pipe bombs, but also contained 3 different chemical compositions. As Rachel would say, "Watch this space."

There's no reason to discount that he actually would leave a fingerprint on a phone they could trace to him.

If I recall correctly, the first WTC bombing used a van that one of the terrorists had rented - not only could the FBI trace the VIN back to the rental agency, but that same guy showed up to claim his deposit (or something like that).

I don't think this was the act of a single person. It appears law enforcement don't think so either. They are understandably playing their cards "close to the vest."

It is really close to home. CHS student. Captured in N.J. Currently at University Hospital in Newark.

This is in our backyard. It will test us.
