ELI IS DONE

Don’t forget that historically deep class that produced Tim Couch and Akili Smith near the top.

I’ll put it this way: As an Eagles fan, I’m more worried about Barkley and a 2019 first-round QB than I would be about Darnold and a 2019 first-round not-Barkley.

Every draft pick is a crap shoot.  13 of the last 20 Superbowl MVPs were QBs.  None were RBs.  Elway, Warner, Brady (Brady, Brady . . . ) Manning (both), Brees, Rodgers.

Warner, Brees, Rodgers and Brady were not high first round draft picks.

Yup. That's why when my team gets a first-rounder who impresses the way Barkley has, regardless of position, I don't look back.

I know I like to be contrarian, but I would like to see the Giants draft top blockers first, and look for a QB in later rounds or find one in free agency--even a one or two year placeholder while they look for a long term solution over the years.

Barkely is a massive talent but will be limited by lousy passing game as teams key on him.  No QB can do very well with a porous front line, either.  Great offense starts with great defense of your backs.

They also need better talent appraisal than in the past. In the past six years, they've drafted four offensive linemen with Top 50 picks (Pugh, Richburg, Flowers, Hernandez), easily the most of any position group.

Although over a year old this article still rings true.

https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/eli-manning-is-profoundly-mediocre/

And by the way, even the past two seasons his average time given to throw is close to the league average.   Just an overrated qb who was lucky enough to play on what was a really good team.

Let him go.

Looks like one Eli is done. Done with the Giants, anyway.

They lost a Yalie?

You can't spell Elite...er...Yalie without Eli.

I’m a novice at this kind of speculation, and while I would agree that Eli has seen better days, it was the Maras who decided to stick with him, spend so much money on the pourous offensive line, and who chose a coach with a not so stellar record. Not enough in the press about the owners responsibility in this disaster of a season. It’s a systematic failure that starts at the top.

Just read Snacks Harrison got traded for a round 5 pick. Pretty much everyone is on the table and the Giants are in full rebuild mode, hoping to lose more games than Oakland to get hold of Justin Herbert from the Ducks, if he declares.

The Giants are so inept that they will wind up winning half the rest of their games and get a meh first round pick (note that most of the rest of their season is against lousy teams).

Patrick Mahomes was the 10th pick in the draft.

Mahomes has targets and an offensive line.

He does.

But my point is that if a team does its scouting well, they don't need a top 3 pick to find a star.  Aaron Rodgers was drafted at the end of the first round.  Drew Brees was a second-rounder.  And there's not much chance that the Giants will end up with a pick worse than 10-11th given their current record, even if they manage a few wins the rest of the season.  They'll have their chance to get a QB if they want one in the 2019 draft.

I got your point. Mine was that drafting a quarterback without drafting or signing all of the accessories isn't much help.  They need several high picks.

...But it looks like the Giants got the next Barry Sanders.

In more ways than one if they don’t get themselves an O line and a passing game.

if it was just Eli, it would be so much easier.

O Line would look a lot better if they had a QB who was more mobile and had a quicker release. Eli is painfully slow.

True, but it still sucks regardless

Looks like Lauletta might be on ice this weekend.

 Um... Yeah.

Jets: A stinker for the ages and maybe the worst first half in franchise history.  The only positive is it shows that Darnold is not the problem.  Don't know how a coach survives a game like this but its the Jets so who knows.  It's not like he was doing a bang up job before.

Gotta love the Giants.  A late season surge that guarantees they don't get the top draft pick this year.

Darnold Stats:

55% completion rate, 1,934 yards, 11 TD, 14 INT, 68.3 rating

Barkley Stats:

728 yards rushing (158 attempts), 540 yards receiving (64 receptions), 10 TD

Darnold may not be the problem, but he's not the solution either.

Far from clear either way.  Many great QBs had terrible rookie years.  Darnold is working with what is thought to be the worst O line in football (and a center with an injured finger) and no stars in any offensive position.  What's a kid supposed to do?

Since when did a kid have to have a great year right out of college?  Is that what it has come to?  Draft one player, expect to make the playoffs?

Funny how team sports work like this.

Would you rather have the quarterback who was taken with the 10th pick playing for the Chiefs, or any of the guys in the league taken with a top 3 pick?

Good scouting and coaching can land a team a franchise QB at any spot the first round.
