my electronic ticket unfortunately disagrees, and says it will expire on the 1st. I thought paper and electronic were identical, but I guess I was wrong.

Heads up, according to the fine print on the schedules, monthly's are good until noon of the first "commuting" day of the month which for January is the 4th! Free weekend!
