Deadline Roulette

Phillies trade Hamel to Rangers for a handful of future stars. Excellent trade for the Phils, methinks. As for the Rangers, if they keep their rotation healthy they are going to be a force. But pitching in the heat in that stadium seems to be trouble for many.

Tigers trade Price to Blue Jays for a handful of future stars. This was a good trade for both teams, as the Jays push to win big this year. But Price is a free agent at the end of the season, and the Jays gave up some damned good prospects. So on balance, the Tigers got better for longer.

Never usually good to trade prospects for rentals but didn't the Blue Jays get Tulowitzki too from the Rockies (for Reyes) without giving up prospects so maybe it's not so bad a deal. How's your team up in Boston doing? Are they sellers or buyers? Not following since I'm just depressed about the blown saves and am very cautious about this upcoming series against the Nats.

The Red Sox? Are they even playing this year?

I'm planning to take my older son up to Boston for his first game in about two weeks. Can't get two together through the box office and StubHub prices continue to be insane. I'm thinking I'll just buy on game day. I was hoping people would be avoiding them this year for fear of catching whatever it is the entire team is infected with.

Still nothing like Fenway on a summer day. Sigh.

I don't know about future stars, but I like the trade, too. And you can't beat the way Hamels went out, with that no-hitter. Thanks for the memories, Cole.

Son will be at the Rogers Center on Monday. Tops on his souvenir list: a Ben Revere Blue Jays jersey.
