I can't speak to the validity of this cost.
However, I do know there is a secondary market for used refrigerant. Old types of refrigerant can not be manufactured anymore but can be recovered, cleaned and resold. I believe this secondary market is rather lucrative since it allows people to maintain older systems instead of costly replacements.
Knowing this, I'm always a bit dubious when I hear of expensive recovery quotes.
I have a quote of $2647+ tax, to remove and replace an "old" (never worked properly) ducted Aprilaire whole house dehumidifier that was installed about 7 years ago. It's a straight replacement, so need to remove the old and put the new one in the same spot on the system, which includes detaching/reattaching ducting and removing/reinstalling low voltage to the furnace.
The highest retail price I can find online for this unit is $1280. That leaves $1,367 to cover misc. parts, labor and refrigerant recovery.
I get that everyone needs to make a living, but I'm curious if this price is reasonable and fair. This same company is also replacing a never-worked-properly whole house steam humidifier on another zone for another couple grand, the same day.
This is a new relationship that I am hoping is long-term and positive. I would just appreciate some help in wrapping my head around these numbers.
TIA!
