Cold Christmas (was: Chance of a bit of snow here Sunday)

A note on the various watches and warnings...as of now:

The High Wind Warning is for areas east of SOMA, including Newark, New York City, and some of Long Island, but not here.  Here it is expected the winds and gusts will remain just below Advisory level.

Similarly, the Flood Watch is just west of SOMA, including all the northwestern counties of NJ and most of the Poconos, but not here.

What if this thing changes over to snow and ice come Friday evening? That is what worries me the most. The roads could become slippery and I’m sure salt trucks won’t be out.

Thanks, guys! (Said in my best NJ accent.)

Very unlikely for there to be frozen precipitation Friday afternoon, as the cold air mass is behind the storm. Where there are puddles, they are likely to freeze, and black ice is not out of the question.

Thurs Dec 22

Forecast on track for rain and wind today, tonight, and tomorrow, followed by cold Friday night and over the weekend.

Slight chance of snow flurries this morning, then rain moves in this afternoon, becoming heavy overnight Thursday-Friday. Winds pick up tonight with steady in the 20 - 25mph range with gusts possible into the 40 - 45mph range. Rain likely Friday morning, and a thunderstorm is not out of the question; wind continues. Wind and rain ending Friday afternoon as the temperature starts to drop, falling from the 50s into the teens by daybreak Saturday.

Friday Dec 23

Colder, with wind

As of this morning at 7:30, the main rain bands have moved off east. There is one more tranche of rain to come mid morning as the cold front starts to pass through, and a slight chance of a flurry or two of snow this afternoon.

The main headlines today are the cold and wind. The day's high of near 60⁰ will happen shortly, and then it's all down hill from there, with temps likely to be in the teens by 5pm. The wind has paused for a moment now, but will pick up again as the front moves through with steady 20 - 25mph and gusts in the 40s well into this evening. Wind chill this evening and tonight below zero (0⁰).

Tomorrow (Christmas eve) continues cold and breezy, with low temps below 0⁰ and highs only in the teens. Winds in the 15 - 20mph range and gusts to 30mph means wind chill ("feels like") below or near 0⁰ most of the day.

Ick.

I've been charging my rechargeable back-up batteries in case power goes out, so we'll have phone charging capability and light.

But no heat backup, other than piles of blankets.

ETA: I just remembered I have some of those disposable ski hand/food/body warmers. And a couple leftover chafing dish burners.

And opening up my sink cabinets now that are along exterior walls to keep the pipes warmer.

Email Blast from Maplewood Township:

Strong winds, rainfall, and freezing temperatures are anticipated across the tristate area through Saturday morning. Heavy rainfall of 1" to 2" is anticipated, with winds of 25-35mph and gusts as strong as 45-55mph. There is a potential for flash freezing and Black Ice beginning Friday afternoon/evening rush hour. Cold temperatures are anticipated for Friday evening/night, with sub-freezing temperatures continuing through Monday. Snowfall is not anticipated at this time.

In preparation for the storm, Maplewood Department of Public Works Crews will be treating Township roads, paths, and municipal lots beginning Friday evening. The Maplewood Police Department will be allowing overnight parking from December 23 through January 2 to accommodate holiday guests. However, if there is a snow emergency, all vehicles will be required to be removed from the roadway. The Maplewood Police Department would like to remind all residents and visitors that, as temperatures continue to drop, vehicles should not be left unattended to warm. Any vehicles left unattended should be locked with keys removed. Valuables and packages should not be left in vehicles.

Maplewood will be operating community heating centers to assist residents as needed. Any resident in need of heating center access should contact the police non-emergency line at (973) 762-1234. Residents will be invited to go to the Municipal Court/Police Headquarters and will be housed in the court room until a formal heating center is opened and staffed. Once the heating center is open, residents will travel or be transported to the center.

Strong winds have the potential to down tress and powerlines; power outages are possible. Unsecured objects and scattered tree limbs may be moved by gusts of wind. Residents and business owners are advised to secure outdoor objects. Travel should be avoided whenever possible and caution should be used when on the roads. In the event of downed power lines or trees, residents should contact both their local energy provider and the Maplewood Police Department non-emergency line.

JCP&L: 1-888-LIGHTSS (544-4877)
PSE&G: 1-800-436-PSEG (7734)
Maplewood PD non-emergency line: (973) 762-1234

Downed wires should always be considered "live," and residents should remain at least 30 feet away. Residents who rely on power for medical equipment should notify their local energy provider as well as the South Essex Fire Department (SEFD) non-emergency line prior to the storm.

SEFD non-emergency line: (973) 762-6500

Hoping we don't get an ice glaze on sidewalks and roads.  It doesn't look bad by me right now.  It's getting cold fast.

Salt trucks out on south orange Avenue.

Current temperature at Essex Green is HOLY MACKEREL IT’S ****ING COLD.

I encountered several icy intersections driving around this evening. Haven’t felt cold like this is a while.
