Automatic Weapons Will Be Banned In New Zealand

They didn't even give thoughts and prayers a chance to see if they would work.

Interesting that they held out as long as they did before becoming more in line with our laws.

Unfortunately, they needed a shock to the system.  It's my understanding that they're going beyond our laws.

Damn them.  They must be godless commies.

Our NRA and our spineless politicians keeping the US of A exceptional. Lucky us.

Can someone clarify?  Were automatic weapons really legal in NZ or are these articles referring to semiautomatic weapons?

They are talking about semi automatic weapons.

The difference between semi automatic and full automatic is you need to pull the trigger of a semiautomatic each time you want to fire a bullet. Automatic weapons allow continuous fire by holding the trigger.

Either option is horribly deadly. The mass shootings in the US in recent years have been with semiautomatic weapons. You can fire as fast as you can pull the trigger and the magazines can hold dozens of rounds.

I figured as much.  It seemed unbelievable that automatic weapons (which have largely been illegal in the US since the 30s) would have been legal in NZ.  It is annoying the way that the media conflates these terms.

it’s not that annoying. What’s annoying that either one of them is legal for civilians to purchase anywhere.

The first mass shooting was Texas Tower in 1966.

Actually the first ‘modern’ mass shooting was September 6th 1949 in Camden NJ by a WWII veteran.

That’s it, it’s law.

I’m not sure how much of this has been covered in your press today.

Lots of coverage here in newspapers and radio news this morning.

They could, in theory, mention it without giving deep details. But I'm glad they are.

Analysis over here is saying 'it's not as not as good protection as Australia has', but excuse me for not feeling protected or safe any more.
