About the Play:

"The Colored Museum" is a powerful and satirical exploration (in the spirit of “In Living Color!”)

of African American identity through a series of 11 exhibits. This thought-provoking play

challenges stereotypes and celebrates Black culture with humor and heart.

Casting Requirements:

Actors who identify as African-American, Black or of the African Diaspora with improvisational

skills, who are familiar with the genre of satire and the ability to embody different characters are

strongly encouraged to apply.

Audition Details:

• Audition Dates: Monday-January 13th and Tuesday January 14th: 7pm-10pm

• Callbacks: Wednesday-January 15th: 7pm-10pm

• Location: Burgdorff Center 10 Durand Rd Maplewood, NJ 07040

Please prepare a 90-second monologue and 16 bars of a gospel or a R&B inspired song (with

clearly marked sheet music) in the style of the show. Material should show range and an

understanding of dramatic satire.

Character Breakdowns:

1. Miss Pat: A stewardess who guides passengers through 300 years of African American

history

2. Aunt Ethel: A stereotypical Black woman who hosts a very unusual cooking show

3. Junie Robinson: A charming soldier and veteran with a deadly secret

4. Miss Roj: A transgender character who discusses style, power, and discrimination

5. Lala Lamazing Grace: A superstar (Josephine Baker inspired), ex-pat of France,

returning home to the US after a long departure, confronting her past

6. Topsy Washington: The life of the party with a vivid, reimagined and inspired tale

7. Normal Jean Reynolds: A naive young country girl who has an unusual encounter

which challenges her innocence

8. The Kid: A manifestation of a man's younger self, fighting against discarding past

memories4

9. The Man: A man who has created a version of his life, leaving his past behind

10. Walter-Lee-Beau-Willie-Jones: A complex character representing multiple theatrical

stereotypes

11. Mama- Another complex character representing some of history’s most beloved and

distorted stereotypes of “Mamas"
