Yeah ... Yesterday early evening I was driving Milburn Avenue toward Maplewood. Everything was on in Millburn until Wyoming, where the traffic light was out. At Vauxhall, the light was out until I was pretty much under it and it turned green for me. All good after that.
Yup. That's right about when our generator popped on. I live close to the Millburn/Wyoming intersection. Power was only out for maybe 5 minutes or so.
On another note, I guess it rained like hell all night. I emptied the rain gauge over my deck garden before going to bed and this morning it read almost 4 inches. The rain barrel was filled and all the overflow capacity was filled, too.
It is a fun little DIY project I have to see how I can maximize its ability to capture some roof runoff. I believe that rainwater is better than that from the hose for the garden so it keeps me occupied. Now that I know how to make one I have to keep myself in check so I don't go putting them at every possible point around the house and garage. As for saving on my water bills, I doubt I save much but who knows? With well over 100 gallons used per day, I don't think 80-85 gallons of rainwater will make a difference. Definitely won't cover the cost of my tinkering for quite a while.
Elsa sum-up post
We really hit the jackpot with this one. As of 8:00 this morning we had 2.35" of rain here in eastern Maplewood. The map posted below will show that that the heaviest rain through 9:30 this morning (a combination of yesterday's thunderstorms and Elsa overnight) fell in a roughly east-west line from Sparta and Hopatcong through the city and along both Long Island and Coastal Connecticut. LI and CT are still experiencing some rain at this hour (11:00am). My rain measurement is below the green arrow on the map. Chatham and Madison win the local prize with over 3" each.
Winds were not significant from a tropical storm standpoint here in MAPSO, although there were some gusts, especially in the stronger thunderstorm cells in the system preceding Elsa.Might get a bit gusty this afternoon when the wind swings around from southeast to east as a cold front moves through. The front may also bring a small thunderstorm.
It seemed that the thunderstorms yesterday afternoon had more wind and may have more rain than Elsa.
