Creatures in the news — winged, four-footed, cute or scary

While I would never call cats or dogs “creatures,” I want to share this tale (tails) from last Sundays NYT…

Its a pretty accurate description, don't you think?

One interesting quality not mentioned is that they can be equally discerning about each other. I've lived with multiple cats and every now and again, one will have a strong dislike for a particular cat. Equally fascinating is how a cat will develop a particular love for another cat. Mostly they all get along, but they do have their preferences.

Speaking of animal couples, did your media cover this shattering end to a wonderful romance?

Sphen the gentoo penguin - one half of a world-famous same-sex "power couple" - has died in Australia, aged 11.

He and his partner Magic shot to global stardom in 2018 when they fell in love at the Sea Life Sydney Aquarium, later adopting and raising two chicks.

This morning - Red Fox, walking across West Parker.

@Morganna, @mtierney, @FJJ, I reckon this will become an ear worm and you’ll sing this to the cool kitties in your lives:

Loved the video, Joanne! Harry the Cat’s Mom found a dead mouse in the garage yesterday — can’t blame Harry, though. My PM and crime scene check indicate the deceased slipped and fell down a glass vase stored amid my gardening stuff.

Don’t believe he has  violent gene in his, current, 18 lbs+ body!

Two of these were fluttering about our butterfly bush. I’m glad we could give them a respite on their long journey south.

This little guy was on my walkway this evening. First wooly bear I’ve seen in a while.

I saw this handsome caterpillar last fall. Not sure what kind of butterfly he is planning on emerging as.

OMG, this is breathtaking in many ways! A python spotted while consuming a platypus!!

(And in my State, too)

Nature is, um, amazing…

This guy has been chasing the does up and down our block. It’s that time of the year.

If he’s successful we’ll be seeing a bumper crop of fawns in the spring.

In the swamp, this morning 11/1/24.

Apparently the buck whose photo I posted is not to be trifled with. A neighbors dog got into a tussle and is now in the vet emergency clinic.

It is mating season for deer. The males get verrry aggressive. Keep your distance, your pets as well.

The regular culling in the Rez keeps the deer population down.  I understand the reason but my heart is with the deer and I'm always happy when I see them.

On a sad note, the dog who got gored by the buck died. The family is obviously devastated.

I love having the wildlife in our backyards but it’s easy to forget they’re wild animals at times. We have deer in our neighborhood who are very accustomed to humans and won’t run off unless you get really close or make a lot of noise. This buck clearly felt that he was in his territory.
