Caught some of the HBO Bryant Gumbel show with Bernard Goldberg doing a disturbing expose on horse racing. I knew about the doping of horses and some of the publicized deaths but heard some shocking yearly numbers at various tracks. I'm looking for something published as so many do not have HBO.

Morningstar has sausage crumbles that are great in a sauce but they rarely carry them in Shoprite. They have the regular beef like crumbles. Cool for chili.

Which do you like. I finished Monringstar's and tonight had Boca Burgers but didn't like these as well. They seemed breaded. Not the way I remember them.
I try to avoid binging on pasta, my go to comfort food. I'm growing basil in my garden for pesto. Yum.
I really like these veggie masala burgers they have at Trader Joe’s. They are in no way meant to pass as meat but they make a very tasty meal on a hamburger bun with cheese, red onion, pickles and condiments.

I tried them once. I doubt I remember what meat tastes like so I'm pretty easy to please. I'm a regular at TJs so I explore quite a bit. They have pretty good produce at fair prices.
They had a wicked carrot juice with turmeric and pepper. Wow. I decided it would be a great substitute for Bloody Mary mix. I think mixed with vodka I could invent a new drink A Bugs Bunny!
I had planned on the next post being a positive one. Most animal advocates like myself, turn off so many good people who do not want to hear sad things. Got it but.....

Admittedly the title of this article, is going to annoy a lot of people but, it has been updated for accuracy and has a great deal of interesting stats on meat's impact on the environment. As almost everyone on this board is looking for a candidate who has a plan to combat climate change, here are a few suggestions, one is a tax on the products causing significant harm. And if you come away with the idea that you are not ready to give up being a carnivore, you might considering limiting your consumption.

Vegan Senator Cory Booker is on a mission to get wild animals out of circuses.
The politician from New Jersey has co-sponsored a bill — put forward by Democratic Senator Bob Menendez — that would prohibit the use of wild and exotic animals in circuses, carnivals, and parades across the U.S.
The Travelling Exotic Animal and Public Safety Protection Act nationalizes New Jersey’s circus ban, which was passed at the end of 2018.

Vegan Musicians
A number of musicians have stopped eating animal products, including Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish, and Ariana Grande. Will.i.am — Jessie J’s fellow judge on the singing contest “The Voice” — also follows a vegan lifestyle.
The rapper and frontman of hip hop group The Black Eyed Peas went plant-based back in 2017 for health reasons. Since then, he has discovered the ethical side of veganism and has spoken up for animals and the environment.
He said in a video on Instagram last year, “if we didn’t have these fancy utensils, would I have the ability to go up to a living creature and like, savagely kill it to eat it? Could I do that?”
“It wasn’t ‘I love animals,’ ‘let’s save the planet’ at first,” he continued. “What made me switch was, I went to the doctor and he said I had high blood pressure and high cholesterol. He told me he was [going to] give me some pills to bring it down. I’m like, why pills though? Why can’t you like, give me a regiment on what to eat and what not to eat?” He added, “then, I started thinking about animals, did I really need them? Turns out, you don’t.”
So, insects and food, I wonder how the new waves of people turning to vegetarian and vegan options will feel about black soldier larvae (i.e. maggots) rendered down to fats and proteins then recombined into ‘normal’ foods?? (‘Insects have no feelings’)

OK, so insects and food is not making me want to read that article. I'm vegan, its hot outside and I just want to plunk down in the yard with some yummy watermelon.

The insects in question, black soldier flies, don't eat or eliminate waste as adults and I think they don't have a blood supply. They don't have nerves which is why they don't feel pain. (As adults they don't have mouths or buttholes) As larvae, they eat enormous amounts of almost everything, which is why cities need them - they'll help us to handle our garbage better than almost any other system. They also spin amazingly strong, fine sillk. We can ethically 'recycle' those spent bodies into fats and proteins needed to produce new vegan foods in forms traditionalists recognise for less cost and using less valuable resources than other vegan options.

You can farm them yourself in a very small space, 6 weeks from eggs to beginning new cycle. That's pretty efficient, better than most worm farms.

OK fair enough but soy products have been shaped and colored and seasoned to imitate pretty much anything and it seems to grow easily and widely so I'd have a hard time jumping on the band wagon or should I say "buggy." By the way, a similar argument was made for some shellfish. As we vegetarians started to give up categories of food, a few of my friends continued to eat clams.
The day I asked a friend why clams opened as they were cooked I gave up clams.
I would love to get this going in NJ. Planning on sending this idea to Booker and Menendez.

Used to work a block or two away from a prison in Beechworth, Victoria. Some of the inmates there trained guide dogs/puppies and other assistive puppies. Some wonderful personal histories of transformation in health, perspectives, community connections and communication. Excellent program.
One of our NJ senators, Cory Booker, is vegan and a strong animal advocate, as mentioned above, working on banning wild animals in the circus nationally. He also has a strong platform on prison reform. Unfortunately he is on the campaign trail running for president along with 20 others, so until he finishes his campaign, he probably will not be focused on this issue but I'll give it a try. I actually had the audacity to petition him online to help us save our local shelter.
I have heard of programs working with dogs as well. As a teacher I tried to get permission to bring rescue kittens to school but always faced the allergy issue. I did get signed permission slips to take my students to a local shelter. And in my Peace Jam club, my group chose an anti dog fighting campaign as their issue. Very proud of them and completely miss Peace Jam.
Go Illinois who joins California and Nevada in banning cosmetic product testing on animals! When will NJ and NY join the good guys! How about calling our legislators?

1. End euthanasia in shelters.
2. Allow animals to stay with the homeless in shelters.
3. Laws to allow pets in federal housing.
4. Strengthen the Endangered Species Act after this administration's weakening.
5. End cosmetic testing on animals.
6. Minimum space and better conditions for farm animals.
7. End the practice of keeping wild cats as pets.
